Yoga Place Abertawe

My name is Lisa White. I am originally from Jersey in the Channel Islands, (in)famous for its Jersey Royals - potatoes and beautiful cows! I have had a life-long affinity with Wales, thanks to both sides of my family whose roots criss-cross Wales, in Llandrindod Wells and Anglesey.

I arrived in South Wales - via East London - 8 years ago, where I initially had a Yoga Studio. And it was in 2016 that I was able to eventually open my passion project ‘Yoga Place Abertawe & Therapy Centre’, in the Swansea Valley village of Clydach.

I have been a student of Yoga since I was a 4 year old, attending classes and practicing at home whenever I could.

Fast forward a couple of decades, I was diagnosed with a chronic panic disorder in my late 20s. I knew something had to change, as my once fun and carefree life was put on hold. Everything from socialising, gigs, theatre, dining out, to even travelling on a bus or flying, were nigh on impossible.

story photo 1This is when I fully threw myself into ‘getting well’ and committed to a regular Yoga practice. I found teachers whose outlook aligned with mine, before taking the next natural step to train as a Yoga teacher myself.

From the outset I wanted to do something which would have a positive impact, so I specialised in Therapeutic & Restorative Yoga.

I’m hugely passionate about Yoga for Women’s Health - especially Menopause; Yoga to support Panic Disorders; and the precious time that is Pregnancy, and Mother & Baby Yoga.

Besides running Yoga classes, I have also been training Pregnancy Yoga teachers, worldwide, for more than 10 years.

This was a huge step away from the fast, dynamic and demanding practices I had been doing in my earlier years.

During this time of discovery and recovery, I learned so much about the breath, the nervous system, and how moving, breathing and rest, yes, resting, were simple, yet highly effective ways to support us mentally and physically, as we travel through life in general, whether that be facing life’s challenges, having a baby, becoming a new mum, going through menopause, suffering from or recovering from illness, as well as supporting athletes pre- and post-training, or simply keeping ourselves active. And not all Yoga classes take place on the mat - we have (seated) Chair Yoga classes too.

I’m not your ‘stereotypical’ Yoga teacher. I’m a western woman, so besides standing on my Yoga mat, you are just as likely to find me in the mosh pit at a heavy metal gig, or at a rock or jazz concert, or even the ballet!

I am very much a crazy cat lady - I have four who I share my life with, I love foreign films and cake - eating it and baking them! So cake features quite heavily in my workshops, as well as cups of tea!

I only wear black and do not own a pair of ‘Yoga pants’ - M&S and H&M leggings work just fine for me, and I’ve only ever bought one Yoga mat during my 49 years of practicing, and I’m still using it!

I don’t say Namaste at the end of each class, and I have little time for the ridiculous social media photos, that in my eyes, do not show Yoga for what is really is! Yoga is amazing, and it’s made up of so MUCH more than some of the daft and unrealistic posed pics you see posted online; it goes far deeper than that. And because of this, EVERYONE can do Yoga.

Yoga Place Abertawe is a Yoga Studio with a Therapy Centre, and it is stunning. Located in the old deconsecrated church of St. John, it retains many of its original features, including the stained glass windows and font, but sympathetically adapted and added to, to make it a welcoming, cosy space.

“Calming ~ Tranquil ~ Healing ~ Nurturing
Atmospheric ~ Welcoming
Knowledgeable”

Yoga Place Abertawe client testimonials**

Yoga Place Abertawe is just minutes away from the M4 (Junction 45), centrally located to the surrounding areas, with loads of free parking on our doorstep.

This is a Yoga studio with a difference, as I was determined that what is on offer is purely about the practices of Yoga, making its wide-ranging benefits accessible for everyone; where unrealistic, unobtainable expectations (and shoes) can be left at the door, creating a welcoming, safe, supportive, inclusive space.

This is somewhere that even those who have never thought they’d come to a Yoga class can feel comfortable and find out for themselves how these incredible practices can help and support them - just as it had me & I wanted to share that with as many people as possible.

We have a weekly timetable filled with all kinds of Yoga, from lying down, (seated) chair Yoga, therapeutic, somatic, fab & over 50, Nidra, beginners to advanced, pregnancy, Mum & Baby Yoga, so there is a good choice and something for everyone.

story photo 2In addition to our extensive timetable of classes, we are also ‘home’ to an amazing team of therapists – Hypnotherapy, Osteopathy, Chiropody, Reflexology, CBT, Counselling, Aromatherapy, Sports Injury Massage, Dry Needling and Reiki.

This allows us to offer a full service of support under one, wooden-beamed roof to the local community, surrounding areas, and much much further afield.

There are not many small Welsh Valley villages with a Yoga Studio and Therapy Centre, with a rich offering of regular weekend events, such as Sound & Gong Bath, Mindfulness & Reiki Meditations, Autumn & Festive Wreath Making, or our latest, seasonal offering - ‘Wild Weather Yoga’, which embraces the therapeutic benefits of Yoga, woodland and Mother Nature - accompanied by a log fire and hot chocolate.

I am really so proud of this amazing space, our teachers, therapists, the community that we are creating, and all those who entrust us with their wellbeing.

If you have ever felt that Yoga is ‘not for you’, have never tried it, or have been put off in the past, please come and meet me, and my incredible team of teachers and therapists. We have a warm welcome to anyone who walks through our doors - we are a lovely bunch of genuine, unpretentious folk, who are excited to be able to share our passions with you.

We can also create tailored workshops for you, your friends, sports club (previous clients have included tri-athletes), your business, or 1-2-1 sessions.
