The Shared Plate

The Shared Plate is a Community Interest Company (CIC), in Mumbles, South Wales, with people and food at its heart.

We believe the right to good food should be shared by all and shouldn’t come at the cost of our planet or the lives of those working to produce it.

We run programmes that connect, inspire and build resilience in people and communities, through cooking, growing & the arts. We believe in a shoulder to shoulder, hands on approach to learning. Our philosophy is simple. When we’re busy with our hands our minds are freed up to connect and chat with each other. That can mean chopping, planting seedlings or crafting.

Since founding the organisation in July 2018, we have been working with groups from all walks of life. This includes young people, refugees & asylum seekers, people coping with mental health issues & community groups from across the UK, with a special focus on our hometown, Swansea.

story photo 1In March 2019, we had planned to open our community café & workshop space in Mumbles, Swansea. When the covid pandemic scuppered our opening, we turned our hand to helping the community in the best way we know how…feeding people!

Over the next 6 months we served over 11,000 meals to people in need in the community, including the homeless community and NHS staff. We couldn’t have done it without our fabulous band of volunteers and supportive staff. And we still continue to provide food for those in need.

Since then we have finally been able to welcome customers through our doors, making delicious food from Thursday to Sunday, including scrumptious brunches & lunches and more bistro style dishes in the evening.

And we do a much-loved Sunday lunch too, with one customer even telling us “it’s the best Sunday lunch this side of the Severn Bridge!” We are passionate about using local suppliers and seasonal produce as well as vegetables from our very own Shared Garden.

story photo 2We have a host of exciting workshops and events curated with and for the community. This includes our monthly get together - Chop ‘n’ Chat where we prepare & eat a simple meal together, to our co-hosted (with Red Community Project) monthly 3 Talks, where three guest speakers share a snapshot into their lives.

Once a week we have a Chatty Café where people on their own can come in for a free coffee and cake. And we run our cookery & art-based workshops for people of all ages and abilities for anyone wanting to learn a new skill.

Our true passion lies in creating spaces for people to flourish and connect and we have recently expanded our project to The Shared Garden, a small allotment, where we work with groups to grow food for the café and for sale at our local grocers, The Choice is Yours.

The opportunity for people to be part of giving back as well as receiving is a vital part of the equation and one we will be expanding on in the future.
