I’m from Swansea in South Wales, and I’m 23 years old. I think it’s important to note here - though you’ve probably already noticed from my photo - that I use a wheelchair in my everyday life.

My friends and family will read that and sigh “yeah, we know”...

This is because I have a condition called Cerebral Palsy (CP). Embarrassingly enough, I had to learn more about CP, because a stranger once asked more questions about it that I couldn’t actually answer... *bit awks like*.

Point being, yes, I am disabled; but growing up, I was just a little girl, who sat in a little wheelchair. To my parents, I was simply Emily Nicole, their daughter/diva hahaha!!

I remember my mum saying to me in my teens that “the world didn’t revolve around me”. And I was genuinely shocked and appalled!

My life has been plenty of things, but boring isn’t one of them…

I am loud, gobby, unapologetic, and POSITIVE and I’ll be sharing random thoughts, with my unique sense of humour and potty mouth on all magazine-related topics, every month. Reading is believing!

“Rainbow”

A rainbow is the result of ‘the sunshine after the rain’ buuut unfortunately, my whole article is not talking about that 90s club banger by Berri!

Any rainbow is proof that from our gloomy and cold misery can spring the brightest thing that flips your day upside down.

The first person that described a rainbow must’ve seemed off their nut. “Ohhhh yeah, multicoloured sun beams that look like an arch in the sky.” “Yeah, ‘course mate! Have a day off!!”

I wonder, is that because it’s hard to believe in magical stuff when we accept that life generally isn’t?

Are dull things easier to comprehend and compute because we’ve turned slightly robotic as opposed to too hopeful?

Sorry about that, I studied A-Level Philosophy and sometimes I still think I’m Plato’s Prodigy!

Or in the words of that other renowned philosopher….

"The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain"
Dolly Parton

Anyway, sadly, myths and magic seem to go out the window once we stop trading our teeth with the Tooth Fairy for 10 pence pieces or listening out for Santa’s sleigh on the roof.

Life is just life isn’t it?

The funny thing about rainbows for me is: no matter how many times I’ve seen one or tried and failed to take a nice photo of one, I always look for them and I always get SO excited when I see one too for the 27th time.

Alright, yes, I get excited when I push my wheelchair into a straight line without crashing into walls and when I have an extra chicken nugget in my share box BUUUUT.

The point is this:

Rainbows can’t exist without sun or rain. In a way, I suppose they’re more normal than we think.

The euphoria and speciality of a rainbow can only exist after overcoming the highs and lows of the weather. Without the rain, the sky is just sunny and stale. Without sun, it’s just damp and dreary.

I suppose sometimes, rainbows give me hope that my meltdowns and melancholy will one day kilter out and transform me into something mental, like, unicorn or a wizard... but then I remember.

Special things exist within and among us all the time, all at once. We’ve just got to notice them. After all, you can’t see a rainbow with your eyes closed, can you?
