**What's in my Wardrobe**
This month is Halloween and it’s time to find an amazing costume, go crazy with the makeup and adorn yourself with weird and wonderful accessories. Who doesn’t love a good excuse to tap into their inner vamp?
For this year’s costume I chose one of *the* most iconic villainesses in cinematic history - Walt Disney’s, Sleeping Beauty’s “Maleficent”.
The outfit itself consisted of a black dress with huge draped sleeves which can double up as wings. The sculpted shoulders are exaggerated with huge pointy collars, which can be shaped into the required angle.
The fabulous horned headpiece, is molded onto a latex skull cap which is padded on the inside, snugly holding the hair in place.
A pair of black heeled shoes and Maleficent’s staff complete the look. Oh and an enormous set of wings were added in post-production for an even more dramatic, other-worldly look.
Nails: Lucy from Irresistible Beauty applied a white base coat to the nails, a layer of black holographic glitter and all topped off with a layer of silver holographic glitter. A very sparkly, striking look. I’m tempted to suggest Lucy calls this design the ‘Northern Lights’, as an homage to the Aurora Borealis which have been lighting up the UK’s skies this month, and more than a passing nod to Princess Aurora of Sleeping Beauty fame!

Every fashionista knows that no outfit is complete without finishing the look from head to toe - and that includes your face!
Each month I’m going to show you how I’ve created the look, with a few product recommendations and industry secrets thrown in along the way.
Working with Emma is a dream and we learn from each other all the time. She truly understands her skin and knows what she likes and is comfortable with. Then that’s where I’m called in, and encouraged to push the boundaries and take Emma out of her comfort zone!
There are no strict rules with makeup - just tips and tricks. Makeup is personal, individual and should reflect your mood. Do what makes you feel confident.
It’s October. And with Halloween around the corner, I knew we’d be in for a fun-filled shoot when Emma asked me to help her become Maleficent for this month’s issue. As this wasn’t our usual occasion/event glamorous look, Emma gave me full creative control over her makeup. Trick or treat? Hmmm - definite treat! I turned up like a kid at Christmas, makeup kit in hand and ready to dive in!
Maleficent has really been brought to life by the incredibly beautiful Angelina Jolie. Instead of copying the look exactly, we took inspiration from Angelina’s striking and sexy glam look. I was very careful not to create a ‘fancy dress’ caricature as Emma wanted to put a glamorous twist to this costume. Something which was quirky and fun in the spirit of Halloween, yet still classy enough to feel confident and feminine.
Eyes & brows: Before applying the base, I start with Emma’s eyes and brows. This is a great way to start if you’re working with dark eyeshadows; the under-eye area can be cleaned of any eyeshadow residue (‘drop down’) before you start the complexion.
In the film, Maleficent has striking green eyes, which are perfectly contrasted with purple toned eyeshadows. Emma has amazing blue eyes; instead of wearing green contacts, we played on the natural colour and contrasted this with orange and copper tones to base the eye shadows, giving a warm and blended edge to the crease and bottom lash line. I added a dark plum tone to the area, before intensifying with a matt black, focusing on the outer corners to create that lifted, sharp winged effect. I darkened Emma’s eyebrows - using my favourite Anastasia Beverly Hills dip brow pomade in chocolate - more than I usually would; as her hair wasn’t on show, and the makeup look was strong, a darker brow was key in balancing out the strong features.
Skin/base. After cleaning up any eyeshadow ‘drop down’, I used Charlotte Tilbury’s Mini Miracle Eye Wand - an eye cream and light reflector - to prep the under eye area and add a little coverage. This really is a magic wand! The consistency is a dream...so light and hydrating. Zero creasing and zero dark circles. And especially perfect for mature skin.
Full coverage cream-based foundations were used to create a flawless finish and base - a natural tone for all over the face and an ashy darker tone to create a strong contour. Using ashy tones for contouring is key when working with lighter skin tones - they don’t create a white/orange contrast and instead leave a more natural ‘shadow’ on the hollows of the face.
The base was set with a very fine milled translucent powder, and an ashy bronzer was added to the contoured areas to soften any lines (Nars Laguna powder is excellent for this). High points of the face were highlighted with a soft shimmer.
After finishing the look with a sharp edged dark berry lip, lots of mascara and some extra lashes, it was time to grab our gal by the horns and get in front of the camera!

**A Heavenly Hint**
Last week I received an SOS message from my trainer Tara Hammett. She needed an outfit for a charity ball.
The female party guests were going to be wearing something glamorous and sparkly, and Tara wanted to do the same. WHY? Why would you want to look like everyone else? Dare to be different and stand out for all the right reasons.
With all the ladies in long dresses, I encouraged Tara to go the complete opposite.
We found a Versace dress for her in Moda, Swansea, which accentuated her fabulous figure perfectly. It was simple and fierce - and boy not only did she look different - she also stood out from the crowd!
Next time you need to dress up for a night out or any occasion, don’t be afraid to try something different!
**A Heavenly Treat**
After the heavier than what I’m used to makeup for Maleficent, I decided my face needed some VIP treatment.
With makeup removed and a freshly cleansed face, I applied a face mask.
My favourite masks are the peel off variety. You start with a gel like substance which you smooth all over the face, avoiding the eye and mouth area. As it dries, the gel mask tightens which feels amazing.
After 20-30 minutes the mask is ready to come off. And in my opinion, this is where the fun begins!
I start at the top and work downwards, peeling away the impurities which cause the skin to be rough and dull.
I award myself a bonus chocolate if I can peel off the mask in one go!
Once the mask is off, I dampen a washcloth with warm water and press against my skin for a few minutes to open the pores.
To complete my at home TLC/VIP treatment I slather on the eye cream and moisturiser - not forgetting to savour that bonus chocolate - cocoa heaven!
