Elemental Wisdom: The gift in finding the missing link

There is a famous quote by the Psychologist Carl Jung:

“My evenings are taken up very largely with astrology. I make
horoscopic calculations in order to find a clue
to the core of psychological truth”

When I first heard this, it was like music to my ears, as I base my teachings around counselling psychology and astrology, bringing in divination tools, as for me, there is always a deeper core to the human psyche.
When I look at a person’s astrology chart, I see it as a jigsaw puzzle, breaking it down into tiny pieces. I take three key pieces first:

  1. What elements are running the show?
  2. What sign and house placement is the Planet Mercury in?
  3. What is their Rising sign?

What do I mean by ‘Elements’ you may ask?

Those elements are: Air, Earth, Fire and Water. They can provide me with a whole lot of information; an insight into the personality.
They can tell me when a person is out of balance and in pain; the key is to look at these elements and find out which ones are missing.
In my chart I have all Water, Fire and Air and no Earth - this makes me a ‘psychic sponge’, very emotional. I can take on others ‘dirty water’ and emotions and feel they belong to me. The air and fire elements can make me very erratic, with a quest for learning and discovering the truth.
I was also brought up in a household with parents and a sister with all air and no water; I was the emotional one, and can now see the gift and curse of being surrounded by air heads. I say this lovingly!!

Let’s get to know the Elements some more, starting with Air…

Air: Libra, Gemini and Aquarius
Air people are brilliant, curious, independent, talkative (they literally fill the air with words), observant, and entertaining, but they are also impractical and restless. Air people are intellectuals, always on a quest for new information. And while air people have an enormous propensity to develop new ideas and tell stories (they are perhaps the best storytellers), they have a hard time truly connecting emotionally to others, even though they want nothing more than to be completely understood.
It’s crucial then, for air people to learn how to give weight to their words and tap into the earth and be grounded.

Earth: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn
Earth people are grounded, practical, disciplined and focused. They like instruction, rules, and results, combined with dependable routine. They are also super organised and clean. Earth people are such perfectionists, they are always ready to take on any job or task themselves just to ensure it is done properly. Even then, earth people don’t feel like they, or anything they do is ever good enough. While earth people have few friends, they are unwaveringly loyal to those they do have.

Earth people are monogamous when it comes to relationships. They refuse to engage in idle chitchat, and above all, earth people are deeply connected - as you might have guessed - to the earth.

Water: Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio
Water people are emotional, intuitive, deeply creative, empathetic, spiritual and psychic. Water allows people to emotionally connect with others. And yet, water people are so sensitive that they often have a hard time unplugging from life’s chaos. Consequently, many water people suffer from addiction as they grapple for distraction from life’s pain. Water people tend to be secretive and private.

It is important then, for water people to learn how to hone emotions through meditation and see the value in water. Water is real. Water makes us vulnerable and it makes us human. It connects us with spirit and with soul. If you want to achieve a happy, balanced, and beautiful life… you need water.

Fire: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius
Fire people are enthusiastic, impulsive, inspirational, humorous, dramatic and fun. They are natural performers. While fire people easily swing from one extreme to the other, it is important to remember that fire people speak and act straight from the heart. They deliver everything with passion. And yet, fire people easily grow self-conscious when they speak before thinking (which happens often). So, it is dire for fire people to learn to communicate that they are merely being pushy out of a desire to help.

The fire person’s challenge is to learn to tame the ‘fiery beast’ inside and create balance by drawing from the three other elements: water, earth and air.

I wonder if you can guess which sign is mine? Yes - Sagittarius.
After looking at the elements, the second piece of the puzzle is looking at their Mercury and what sign and element is running their thought process, and mind.

The Planet Mercury represents your mind and intellect. If used correctly, it is the key to spiritual enlightenment, this planet has such an impact on our minds, and for some people their mental capacity and learning.

Our mental health is so important and is the single culprit in the chart. The mind repeats thoughts every 14 minutes and works 24/7 and can run havoc with the psyche.

When I looked at the etymology of the word Mental, it stems from 1500c middle English, also ‘of the soul’, Spiritual. From 1520s as ‘done or performed in the mind’ and by the 1920s crazy and deranged’. This totally fascinated me and made me think of how important the planets and elements are, and how they can affect us, mind, body and soul.

  • Mercury in an Air Element is fast, consumes information like Pacman, has a fast-mental capacity, can think, talk and write but does not have the patience, they can become so fixated even to the scale of potentially developing compulsive behaviours.
  • Mercury in an Earth sign is grounded, slow, struggles with learning fast, will repeat things again and again, learn in bitesize, but once learnt, will have a great memory.
  • Mercury in Water is reactive, memory tied to emotions, they can be fearful of letting people in.
  • Mercury in Fire is dramatic, passionate, strong-minded, loves to learn, needs to talk, knows things, brilliant, spontaneous, blunt.

I want you all to know that you are all fundamentally, unique, quirky, wonderful and everything you think is ‘wrong’ with you is actually right, and to give yourself permission to let go of the parts that you hide, feel vulnerable and bring them into awareness. Give yourself the gift of understanding who you are.

Stand out, understand the parts of you that reflect your personality. You deserve to fall in love with yourself, just as you are, have compassion for others and help to heal the world – one step - starting with you!

Love Debbie
