Is life passing you by?

Allow me to introduce you to the mystical world of our Spirit Guides!
There are spirits all around us and they have so much to share, urging us to reclaim our truth that we are ‘one with spirit’ and are connected to every living thing on this earth.
Over the next few months I will start to introduce you to the different types of guides out there; how we can use their wisdom in the form of messages to help us navigate our lives, move beyond the obstacles, and tune into the infinite potential all around us.
We start off the month of October - this is one of my favourite months - where there is a noticeable shift in the energies and we have just passed through one equinox* (autumnal in the northern hemisphere, vernal in the southern).
*An equinox is when the sun crosses the equator, and day and night are, everywhere on earth, of approximately equal length; this occurs twice a year: around 20 March and 22–23 September, known respectively as the vernal and autumnal equinoxes (in the northern hemisphere).
We move on and look forward to the end of the month, towards Hallowe’en, aka Samhain, which is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, or the ‘darker half’ of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from 31 October to 1 November, as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset. This is about the halfway point between the autumnal equinox (22/23 September) and the winter solstice (21 December).
Each season has a cycle which also has a message for us: such as, when we move into winter, where days become shorter and nights longer - this gives us the opportunity to go into hibernation mode, to replenish our energy and to move into rejuvenation mode, ready for spring.
This is very much like how animals ‘behave, and is a timely way to introduce you to our first set of guides: The Spirit Animal.
In certain cultures and spiritual systems, there is a belief that we each travel with a group of spirit guides, which also includes animals.
A spirit animal is characterised as a teacher or messenger which comes in the form of an animal and has a personal relationship to an individual. Other names might be animal guides, spirit helpers, spirit allies, power animals, or animal helpers.
It is believed that you do not choose the animal, rather that it chooses, or has already chosen, you.
The animal is there to provide ‘medicine’ to the recipient in the form of guidance, lessons, protection, power, or wisdom. Shamans worldwide have relied on the guidance, wisdom, and symbolism of spirit animals for thousands of years.
You can have one or several spirit animals throughout your lifetime. They can come in and out of our lives to give us guidance, teach us about ourselves, and help us maintain balance. The timing and direction we are headed in on our path, a specific occasion that may arise, phases of life, or tasks needing to be completed along our journey will dictate which animal steps forward to help.
An animal can bring us a message in several ways. We can physically cross paths with the animal; we can dream about it; it can visit us in our meditations; or, we might have it as a pet.
To find out who your spirit animal is, you can simply ask for the animal to present itself. You may have an image appear, dream of the animal, see signs and symbols in your working day, turn on the television or listen to the radio, and the animal may appear. Don’t overthink it - just go with the first image or word that comes into vision.
Your spirit animal often represents qualities and attributes that you may see in yourself. On a deeper level, you want to understand the general vibe of the animal and look at it as an archetypal figure in your life; a symbolic representation of you. You may never personally interact with your animal, like a shark or wolf. But pay attention to the details like specific behaviours, character traits, habitat, diet and social status.
As an example I wanted to introduce you to a spirit animal which I specifically chose for the magazine, using the beautiful spirit animal oracle deck by Colette Baron-Reid.
The card which came out was the ‘Rhino Spirit’ - its message is one of ‘you can overcome any obstacle’. It’s a powerful animal representing power, substance, solidity, and stamina. Invite the guidance of this spirit animal and let yourself be filled with its greatness.
When the rhinoceros spirit animal appears to you, it’s telling you that things are not what they appear to be. You need to delve deeper to know the truth and look beyond the masks that people wear.
The rhinoceros may look fierce and powerful, but it’s also passive and non-violent. You can use this rhinoceros meaning in your life by not being too quick to judge people based only on stereotypes and prejudices.
We all have a choice in our life and we all have the power to break through obstacles that have presented themselves to us, whether it’s a situation or a person that has come into our lives.
There are multiple ways we can overcome the obstacle: by avoiding them/the situation, or by facing it head on. It also shows us that when an obstacle comes up, how we deal with it in our daily lives is a reflection of what we do at a subconscious level. Do we choose to walk away or stand up and fight?
This can be exhausting for us and if we stick our heels in the ground, stubbornly insisting that there is only one way, then we will lose sight of the lesson it is showing us. Sometimes it is better to say NO and allow that the guidance we are being shown is saying ‘not for you at this moment’.
When you become open to new possibilities other options will begin to appear; not every conflict is worth engaging in and not every obstacle is worth going headfirst into to fight.
Sometimes trust in the messages that you are being shown and listen to what your spirit animal is telling you. Have fun, and embrace in the beauty and the message.
