Welcome to In The Spotlight

Do you have an amazing business to showcase, or an incredible story to tell?

This month emmaheaven.com is shining the spotlight on...

The Raspberry Cakery

main photoRhian Daniels loved to make cakes from a young age. She was heavily influenced by her mother and grandmother who loved baking; Rhian developed a real passion for it when she moved into her own home after leaving university.

“I was making cakes for friends and family and this progressed to me opening a small bakery about eight years ago.

Some time later I was reunited with my old school friend Helen thanks to social media. This led to us meeting up and reminiscing about our school days, having children and our mutual love of baking, where we discovered we were both pursuing a part-time cake-making business, working from home.

Whilst drinking wine one evening we decided it would be a great idea to combine both our businesses and start working together as one cakery. This would give us both the support and backup needed to grow the business - after all two sets of talented cake baking hands are better than one!

I was approached by an estate agent friend who said she had a property which would make the best cake shop and so The Raspberry Cakery was born.

story photo 1When we started the business we initially intended to make celebration cakes, small cakes and cupcakes to take-away. Once we found the shop it just seemed perfect for a tearoom as well, where we could serve afternoon tea, coffees and cakes as well.

Unfortunately the trade wasn’t great due to the shop’s location and with just two of us in the shop it was increasingly more difficult to manage making the celebration cakes alongside serving customers. When our lease was up we moved premises and re-branded, to concentrate on the cake making.

This was perfect timing as we had been approached by Quay Three in Swansea Marina, who wanted us to make all the cakes for their afternoon teas, which they were just about to launch.

This saw us create our famous ’rainbow cake’ and really got our creative juices flowing.”

The Raspberry Cakery now makes wholesale cakes and bakes to order.

They supply some prestigious coffee shops and bars in the Swansea Bay area, including Copper, Quay Three and The Hyst. They also have the most scrumptious display of cakes for sale at the monthly Uplands and Swansea Marina markets.

story photo 2Some of their scrumptious cupcake flavours include:

Salted caramel
The Jammi Dodger
Cookies & Cream
Lemon Meringue
Apple Crumble
Lotus Biscoff
Eton Mess

Actually the list goes on and on and on...

Their cake repertoire also includes delicious corporate logo and marketing cakes and they are the official sponsor for Swansea’s Next Fitness Model.

And the icing on the cake for this burgeoning business? They are currently working with a new pub in Waunarlywd Swansea, The Farmers, where they are devising a whole new range of desserts. Recipe development is an aspect of the business which Rhian particularly loves as she gets to explore new ideas with their clients - creating new products and flavour combinations, bringing the client’s concepts to life.

story photo 3I too have challenged them to make a selection of cupcakes for my party, to include British sweet shop flavours such as space dust, candyfloss, wham bars and dolly mixtures PLUS cocktail flavours such as strawberry mojito, raspberry bellini and pina colada - oh the excitement and anticipation is building already!
After seeing and tasting the magnificent birthday cake they made for the magazine’s second birthday let’s just say that I now have them on speed dial!!! So many cakes, so little time... decisions decisions... I want them ALL!

And just when you think your French Fancy couldn’t be tickled any more than it already has after this canter through the Cakery’s offerings, - The Raspberry Cakery will be running cake decorating workshops very soon, so make sure you follow them for the latest news on:

Just beware - once you start on this slippery slope of cake tasting with The Raspberry Cakery, there may be no way back! My recent waistline expansion can testify to that! And an even broader grin!!

This slide show should come with a warning!!! If you want to have your cake and eat it you may require some serious time afterwards in the gym. Please ‘cake responsibly’!
