Life on Mars
In this monthly column, I’m going to write from a male’s perspective about the many and varied happenings in the world of fashion.
At no point will I tell you how to dress. I’ll just bring you the wonderful, colourful people who live and breathe fashion and style.
On a personal note, I do like to get dressed up and look smart when I have an event or night out - but I also love nothing more than my comfy chilling out clothes!
This section will showcase a few people every month who have caught my eye for looking outstanding and fabulous. These may be celebrities, sports stars or everyday folk who have dressed and styled themselves impeccably.
I stumbled across Chez during one of my endless browses on Instagram. I instantly adored his style, not least as there are a lot of items in his wardrobe collection that relate to what’s in my own.
Chez is a British model - just a quick glance to check out this guy’s pictures you'll soon see that there’s no style this man can’t pull off. Whether that’s a smart suit teamed with a luxury coat, or the bad boy look of black jeans, low cut tee and a leather jacket.
He has one of the most versatile styles around and that's why he made my Instagram Icons list this month.
Pinpoint the look:
- Modern up to date styles
- Varying textures such as leather, denim and suede.
- Wide range of colours and patterns.
- Smart and casual looks.
Many of you will know Mr Proudlock from TV’s Made in Chelsea. He has been in the show from Series Two which aired in 2011, so he is a familiar face to many.
What people may not know is that he is massively into his fashion. He has set up a number of successful Instagram accounts relating to both his own brand - ‘Serge Denimes’ - an ‘Urban Apparel’ brand, his own private account, plus his account dedicated to style.
Oliver has also designed a range of bowler hats. He is making serious inroads in the fashion world, using his passion for art and fashion to create a successful brand.
On a physical note Oliver is very lean; for some, this is a physique some may find hard to dress, but he completely pulls it off.
Pinpoint the look:
- Wears checkered suits extremely well.
- Often his suits are made up of three pieces.
- Adds jewellery and accessories to his outfits.
Justus F. Hansen
This guy is exactly why I have this section in my column. A gent I happened to stumble across on my Instagram feed. And I love his eye-catching style. He is a young fashion blogger from Germany who has a successful Instagram account with over 130k followers.
One of his main style points which caught my eye is his ability to team a suit jacket and trousers with the most casual, urban trainers on the streets right now e.g. Adidas Superstars or green Vans.
It is a look that theoretically wouldn't work but boy this guy rips up the ‘rule book’ and totally pulls it off. And I love it.
Pinpoint the look:
- Casual street trainers.
- Suits: smart but not too smart.
- Classic colour combinations such as white and navy.
- Layers different textures well: denim followed by wool overcoat - audacious but it works!
What can you say about this man other than he is a style god?! He just seems to be getting better with age, like a fine wine! Ever since his early days as a footballer, David has been at the forefront of magazines and on the receiving end of the paparazzi lens, so has always looked fashionable.
I think it's fair to say that his style, post-Manchester United era, has gone through the roof. In my opinion it is soaring even further with his advertisements for The Haig Club, a fine whisky and a feast for your eyes. David, accompanied by several friends, travelling the world, seeing the sights in the finest styles and best attire, all to advertise a luxury whisky.
David’s fashion credentials reached new levels with his campaigns for Calvin Klein, H&M and more so in 2015/2016 his son Romeo with his Christmas campaign for Burberry.
I think some of Mr Beckham’s best shots are from the work he has done with luxury British brand Belstaff - @belstaff - well worth a look.
Pinpoint the look:
- Leather jackets, denim shirts and multiple layers.
- Dark to black jeans.
- Dresses up well in tux or finest suits.
This part of my column I'm going to share a product every month that I find particularly useful and use day to day. It may vary month in month out between gadgets, fragrance, skincare and hair care.
This month the first product I've decided to highlight and discuss is the “Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Camera”. It's a new camera that reverts back to the old style of instant cameras. I love the concept as it reminds me of instant snaps and the idea of pinning your memories to a board in your bedroom or creating a collage.
It costs between £50-£70, and around £15 for the paper used in the camera.
This is a must have on my ‘wish list’.
This month’s second product comes straight from my own wash bag and is an absolute day-to-day essential. When your face feels noticeably different (for the worse), without using something, that tells you how essential it is!
This go-to item is from Clarins’ men’s range, called ‘Super Moisturiser Balm’ - exciting name I know right?! It has been designed to “relieve dehydrated skin and leave your face feeling more taut and alert”. I have to agree that it achieves exactly what it sets out do. This product is lightly fragranced, with a nice smell, that's not too heavy and which doesn’t linger.
On the Clarins website customers who have bought and reviewed this product agree with my opinion, and all have given it a five star rating.
I really wouldn't be without it in my daily routine.
I hope you find these tips, characters and products I've shown you to be useful and that you’ve enjoyed this month’s read.
See you all next month with my next transmission from Life On Mars.
