Life on Mars

In this monthly column, I’m going to write from a male’s perspective about the many and varied happenings in the world of fashion.

At no point will I tell you how to dress. I’ll just bring you the wonderful, colourful people who live and breathe fashion and style.

Josh Thompson I will be covering male grooming, hair and skincare, fragrance, fashion, tips on style, and people who I think dress exceptionally well.

On a personal note, I do like to get dressed up and look smart when I have an event or night out - but I also love nothing more than my comfy chilling out clothes!

Instagram Icons

This section will showcase a few people every month who have caught my eye for looking outstanding and fabulous. These may be celebrities, sports stars or everyday folk who have dressed and styled themselves impeccably.

Raphaël Spezzotto-Simacourbe

For typing purposes I will be referring to this chap as “Raph” (my poor fingers can take a breather at this point). He is just one of those people you stumble across and instantly fall in love with their Instafeed. It’s a major point of envy for me as he puts up fantastic snaps of travelling scenery, fine food and, needless to say, great outfits.

Raph currently lives in Florence but is used to racking up the air miles as he has recently visited New York, Mexico and San Diego in California. I know right?! not a bad few months. His travelling photos are enough to put a smile on anyone’s face, and although he matches this with tasty photos of food and fabulous outfit shots, it’s the combination of these which make for a truly great Instafeed.

Pinpoint the look:

  • Likes blue colours and pale tones.
  • Mixes up styles such as rock and nautical.
  • Wears head accessories very well, such as hats and bandannas.

The moment I came across this guy I knew he had to make the cut. His style and look is exactly why I love this feature so much. For anyone who loves fashion and different ways to dress, Sandro’s Instagram is a gold mine of outfit ideas and a textbook on how to dress everyday.

It plays on my mind that sometimes the people I write about have expensive or hard to achieve styles; this is why I'm so glad I came across Sandro. His look is great but still has an achievable feel to it.

Sandro is part of a team who run a blog called the-modern-man.com; here you can take a look at fashion, fitness, travel and lifestyle. One of the other team members who helps to run the site is a guy I've previously covered, whom you may recall from last month’s issue - Kosta Williams, another extremely stylish dude.

Pinpoint the look:

  • Relaxed loose fit style.
  • Light colours on top.
  • Often rocks a simple white tee
  • Up to date style.

Real Men Read

Real men read

Recently I have rediscovered my love for reading, which I think this has been brought on strangely by the leaps forward in social media. I found that I would spend and eventually waste hour after hour browsing social media. So I thought that I would create a place in my column to share with you which book(s) I'm currently reading.

My thinking behind this was instead of wasting 30 to 60 minutes a day on Facebook and other social media, I could instead spend that time reading about stuff I'm actually interested in and have a passion for, learning new styles, tips and tricks.

This month’s read is titled ‘Men In This Town’ by photographer, art director and menswear enthusiast, Giuseppe Santamaria. It showcases the fashion, style and look of ordinary people seen on the streets, and also massively influential people in the fashion industry of five major cities around the globe. London, Tokyo, Sydney, Milan and of course New York.

I found this book very interesting as it highlights both the subtle and vast difference in how people dress, and which styles they choose to adopt and show off.

I highly recommend this book - and as childish as this might sound - it’s mainly pictures! The photography in this book is a masterpiece.

Product Picks

Product pickThis part of my column I'm going to share a product every month that I find particularly useful and use day-to-day. It may vary each month between fragrance, skincare and hair care.

This month it’s time to talk fragrance. The time had come to restock my aftershave collection and in my mind there was only one go-to name. Chanel was the brand which came to mind and my weapon of choice is Bleu de Chanel.

As it’s a little more upmarket compared to more everyday brands, this makes for a more unusual scent, so you won't walk down the street and think “oh I recognise that smell” on other people, which I personally dislike. Throw into the mix that it’s rare amongst the people I know means that when people do pick up on the scent, it intrigues them and grabs their attention.

Look of the month

Look of the month

This part of the column is to sign off at the end of the month with a picture of one my favourite outfits I've worn in the last few weeks.

  • Shirt - Zara
  • Jeans - River Island
  • Watch - Police

I hope you find these tips, characters and products I’ve shown you to be useful and you’ve enjoyed this month’s read.

See you next month for my latest transmission from Life On Mars.
