449 Sandwich & Coffee Shop

This little coffee shop is one of Swansea’s hidden treasures ~ once discovered you will be left with the feeling you have struck gold!

The shop is owned by Carly Rees, which she runs with her father Peter Rees, affectionately known as (aka!) and nicknamed ‘The Cheesecake King’. What that man can do with cheesecakes is another level, and he's totally earned his title! They run the most innovative and friendly coffee shop, with the most delicious food on offer that I have had the pleasure to experience.

I’ll hand you over to Carly to tell you how she opened up this little gem of a coffee shop.

“Originally 449 started out as a barber’s shop, which I had already worked in for several years. With little/no cafe facilities nearby, not even somewhere to buy a coffee, freshly-made sandwich or lunch, I saw a gap in the local area, and it needed something along those lines.

story photo 1I hadn’t set out to go into the catering business. The idea and changeover was based more on a (local) need, coinciding with me wanting a change of direction from being a barber.

Initially, the plan was to open the coffee shop nearby, however that didn’t pan out. Time for plan B - with my landlord’s agreement, I received the go ahead to move the barbers upstairs, and open the coffee shop below at street level. That was how 449 began to take shape.

We started to get the shop ready for our new customers. I had to carefully weigh up what was needed in the area vs what I wanted to do! Left to my own devices I would have let my imagination (and paintbrush) run riot!

After talking to local people, friends, and family I was able to get a far better idea of what they needed, wanted, and were looking for.

With the shop up and running, my father was more than ready, willing and able to help - this was an absolute godsend starting out; we were a little bit hesitant as anyone would be with a new venture, plus we weren’t entirely sure what direction we would end up taking.

story photo 2He has been amazing and is the inspiration behind a lot of the food ideas. It’s good old fashioned food like his mother used to make, and is cooked to perfection with the best ingredients possible.

When you come to 449, you get quality, home-cooked, traditional food. We find that once people have been here and tasted what’s on offer, they keep coming back for more!

My father loves to experiment and is always trying out different ideas and creating new recipes. I usually question some of his more elaborate ideas, then end up eating humble pie (not on the menu!) when he creates something extraordinary.

He will try anything at least once and I am grateful for his input and all that he does, and that he has such a passion for the coffee shop. It’s reassuring to know that he is holding the fort downstair, where he is in his element cooking, while I am upstairs in the barber shop. He missed his calling in life - he should have been a chef!

I love the direction the coffee shop is taking. It’s a family-run business where we try to cater to the local people, with everything being authentic, and cooked with love and passion.

story photo 3We like to support other local businesses, so we have cakes, breads and meats from local bakers and suppliers.

We have some exciting developments up our sleeves, so please make sure you follow us on Facebook for more details, which we will be announcing very soon.”

So ladies and gentlemen, I strongly suggest you hot foot it to Brynhyfryd in Swansea to discover this little treasure trove for yourselves. You can thank me, and cross my palm with cheesecake later!

On the menu are home cooked delights such as pasty tart, traditional cooked breakfast, lamb koftas, delicious thick, homemade soups, toasted sandwiches, burgers, cakes…I could go on but the menu is ever-changing, with something new and different to try everyday.

There’s ‘cheesecake’ and then there’s *cheesecake*. Believe me when I say - you have not eaten cheesecake until you have eaten The Cheesecake King’s cheesecake!

So when you go to 449 Sandwich & Coffee shop, remember to try *the* most important thing on the menu - we might have mentioned it once or twice already - cheesecake!

We feature the 449 Sandwich & Coffee shop once more in this month’s Feed Me, where ‘The Cheesecake King’ served us up cheesecake ice cream - boy did he hit it out of the park! You NEED this ice cream in your life!
