Beth Jones came into my life about six or seven years ago when she joined my son Oliver at Gorseinon College to study dance.

She was always happy, lots of fun and VERY artistic. I watched as she auditioned for dance schools and was accepted at Shockout in Manchester but it was sad to see that she wasn’t enjoying her dancing so much anymore and seemed a little lost.

When she dropped out of her course and returned to Swansea I watched quietly as she explored a passion for makeup, following her pages with fascination and excitement as she discovered her talent lay with special effects (SFX) makeup.

My excitement began to grow as she showcased more and more daring, fabulous looks and I just knew I had to get her on board with the magazine.

story photo 1Thankfully she agreed as soon as I invited her to join the team, and in a baptism of fire, we threw her straight into the deep end with her first assignment - last month’s Fashionator (my take on the Terminator series). She took to it like a duck to water (or like a fashionista to prosecco!), creating the MOST spectacular special effects #SFXtraordinaire!

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to the latest member of #TeamHeaven - Beth Jones...

“My main ambition in life was to be a dancer. I auditioned and was accepted to Shockout Dance School in Manchester which specialised in professional and commercial dance.

story photo 2I was two years into a three year course when I realised that this was not for me. It didn’t make me happy and I was no longer enjoying it. So I had to think of something else to do with my life.

I moved back to Swansea and made a mind map of things I enjoyed and discovered not only did I love playing with makeup - I was actually quite good at it! - I also bagged a part time job at a local pub which gave me the time I needed to develop my skills.

I followed lots of YouTube channels, watching tutorial after tutorial, teaching myself all the different techniques, then practising the looks on myself, friends and family, who all loved what I created. This was the confirmation I needed to tell me I had done the right thing in giving up dance and that makeup was now my future.

story photo 3To begin, I set up Facebook and Instagram pages to promote my skills and to advertise my services. My business has exploded since then, so much so that I now rent a chair in a local salon where I can work my magic on my clients.

Even though my business was doing extremely well I wanted to be a bit different and add another string to my bow, as there are lots of makeup artists in Swansea and I wanted to stand out from the crowd. I am an arty person and with Hallowe’en approaching, people had been asking me to create special effects makeup for them. Again I watched lots of tutorials, bought all the relevant equipment and products, and practised and practised until I had perfected my art.

story photo 4I was now ready to unleash myself on the world!

As well as makeup and special effects makeup, festival makeup (glitter, jewels and face paint), I am a qualified nail technician. Other services I provide are eyelash extensions and facials, including dermaplaning.

My end goal is to be on set with The Walking Dead and traveling to movie sets all over the world as a freelance special effects makeup artist, creating fabulous looks with latex and blood - the more far out the better! I also want to be backstage at fashion shoots creating glamorous, edgy looks, doing something different every day.”

Well Beth, get ready to be put to the test! With you now on board, I can guarantee that the shoots will be far more elaborate and my ideas will get bigger, better and a LOT more bonkers! That’s a promise, not a threat!!
