Life on Mars

In this monthly column, I’m going to write from a male’s perspective about the many and varied happenings in the world of fashion.

At no point will I tell you how to dress. I’ll just bring you the wonderful, colourful people who live and breathe fashion and style.

Josh Thompson I will be covering male grooming, hair and skincare, fragrance, fashion, tips on style, and people who I think dress exceptionally well.

On a personal note, I do like to get dressed up and look smart when I have an event or night out - but I also love nothing more than my comfy chilling out clothes!

Instagram Icons

This section will showcase a few people every month who have caught my eye for looking outstanding and fabulous. These may be celebrities, sports stars or everyday folk who have dressed and styled themselves impeccably.

Matthias Geerts

Matthias Geerts

Matthias is a menswear and travel blogger from Europe. He currently lives in Antwerp, Belgium. His Insta feed is full of Northern European posts including his travels and different styles - all of the pictures are really cool and modern.

He has a truly great website, mattgstyle.com where you can find outfits, sport content, grooming and no end of travel. I wouldn't recommend visiting this site if you are prone to envy, but it sure is worth a look.

Pinpoint the look:

  • Bright vibrant colours
  • Mixes up modern outfits and classic looks on a day to day basis.
  • Wears denim shirts/jackets very well.
  • Also wears a more sporty bomber jacket style.

Kosta Williams

Kosta Williams

Kosta is one stylish guy. His style is bang on trend right now and a lot of what he wears I gladly find similarities in my own wardrobe! Kosta is a self proclaimed style icon and “influencer” - big bold claims, but I can honestly say he does fulfill them very well.

Fashion is so hard to get right because styles move and change very quickly, but this guy really is on point right now. Hence his spot on my list this month.

Pinpoint the look:

  • Camouflage is massively on trend right now in both male and female fashion. (Kind of a little win for me as it was featured on “look of the month” last month!)
  • Denim jackets are again a big thing in the UK right now, especially old school classic makes such as Levis and Tommy Hilfiger.
  • Ripped jeans.
  • Greens and khaki colours. Again, so hot right now.

Christopher Millington

Christopher Millington

This guy has a truly great Instagram feed. He is a traveller and documenter. Also vastly important is his tagline which reads “usually in denim”.

Christopher has a rocker style with his wardrobe, which is complimented with a well-groomed and thick beard, exuding a true rock star look.

Christopher - known as “Milly” - was not that long ago working in a phone shop and had applied for a career in the police force.

He found that growing a beard - for a joke! - rocketed him into the public eye, grabbing the attention of a major model agency which gave him a platform to work with some of the UK’s biggest brands such as Topman, River island and Gap.

Pinpoint the look:

  • Denim, denim and yeah you guessed it, more denim.
  • Slim fit blazer worn more casual with a tee, rather than shirt.
  • Check/Tartan shirts.
  • Rock star look.

Real Men Read

Real men read

Recently I have rediscovered my love for reading, which I think has been brought on strangely by the leaps forward in social media. I found that I would spend - and eventually waste - hour after hour browsing social media. So I thought to myself that I would create a place in my column to share with you which book(s) I'm currently reading.

My thinking behind this was instead of wasting 30 to 60 minutes a day on Facebook and other social media, I could instead, spend that time reading about stuff I’m actually interested in and have a passion for, learning new styles, tips and tricks.

This months book is It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want To Be., and billed as “a handbook of how to succeed in life by an advertising guru”. Written by Paul Arden it is a global bestseller. This book is written to change the mindset of the reader and makes you realise that there’s another way than the normal.

I really enjoyed this read, I found myself coming across previous similarities and thoughts in how this book makes you think. And I also enjoy having a change of mindset. I find it keeps me on my toes.

Look of the month

Look of the month

This part of the column is to sign off at the end of the month with a picture of one my favourite outfits I’ve worn in the last few weeks.

  • Jeans - Black Herra London
  • Shoes - Adidas Superstar white/black
  • Jacket - Ralph Lauren
  • Glasses - Ray Ban Wayfarer

I hope you find these tips, characters and products I’ve shown you to be useful and you’ve enjoyed this month’s read.

See you next month for my latest transmission from Life On Mars.
